Rabbit and Wolf Taste the Human Vintage

By John T. Bennett

“Here’s to mercy,”
cheers the rabbit, in the wild.
He toasts the wolf,
who laughs and howls.

Glasses clang upon the table,
the crimson sloshes about;
blood-red wine from the human fruit,
which spilled the vintage out.

Rabbit and the wolf weren’t always friends,
since wolves used to hunt down everything.
But then rabbits started thinking clearly,
And devised a plan, which they held quite dearly:

Find the ugly, violent, talking creature,
trap it down with hooks,
then invite the wolves on down,
to have a little look.

Rabbits sent a messenger to the wolves,
But they would have to send another.
The first one ended up
A quick and savory supper.

When rabbits finally join with wolves
To end the long insufferable reign;
The unnatural and arbitrary rule,
Of the two-legged talking things.
